October Fungal Foray

Fungus enthusiast, Andy Swan, led an eager group through the woods at the top of the Devil’s Punch Bowl between the Hindhead cafe and Gibbet Hill, in search of fungi.   The foray ended with an impressive list of 56 different species that included the wonderfully-named amethyst deceiver, shaggy ink cap, jelly ear, weeping widow and earth balls among many, many others.  Perhaps the most special was the golden bootleg – a very rare fungus that even Andy and other experts see very infrequently.  The walk was almost perfectly timed to arrive back at the cafe after a dry couple of hours, just as the rain began to fall.
